mixin now runs on django 1.0 and Jinja2

As you probably already know, mixin is powered by the django framework. We are really happy and enthusiastic with this framework and community. We have upgraded to django version 1.0. The template rendering engine of django has been replaced by Jinja2. We have complex templates and the rendering is faster with this engine, I would recommend any new django project to use it.

Stay tuned, we are going to release a bookmarklet.

More granular notifications and reply to email notifications

You can now control the notifications at the activity level. If there is to much noise coming from an activity that you are attending, you can turn the notifications off for this particular activity by clicking the speaker button. If you want to follow what is going on an activity and you don’t want to attend it, you can turn the notification on by clicking the same button. When you leave a comment or media on an activity, you will be notified of any changes. You can always turn these notifications off in your notification settings.

You can also click the link at the bottom of your email notification as shown below.

You can also comment or add medias to an activity by replying to the email notification or event inivitation.

mixin – make a proposition

mixin let you share your agenda with your friends in a real simple way. Just specify what you are going to do naturally and let your friend get in touch with you to do things together more often.

But sometimes, you want to do something with your friends, but you don’t know precisely where and when. For that purpose there is a type of activity called a proposition. The syntax to create a proposition is the same as the one to create a plan with one exception. You need to add a question mark at the end of your post to create a proposition. The proposition allows you to specify multiple choices.

For example, you want to lunch with friends but don’t know when and where, just enter the choices separated by semicolon.

Example

Once a proposition is created you can decide if you want to leave the different choices (what, where of when) open or not. Just click on the links next to the choices to open or close them. By default the choices are open.

If you want to invite people to discuss this proposition, click the “invite people to this event” button. You can either select particular friends on the service or invite new friends by entering their email addresses separated by commas.

When your friends receive an email there is link to the detail page. On this page, your friends can  vote or make suggestions if you left the choices opened. And each time something is happening on this proposition (vote, suggestion) or posted to the proposition (comment, media) the users invited to the proposition are notified via their preferred communication channel.

And once the votes are over, the person who created it can transform the proposition into a plan. The administrator of the activity needs to make some of the choices final.

And make it final

Improved API and extended date format support

To make it easier for you to develop your own version of mixin and integration with other applications through the API, we have now added support for Basic Authentication. Up to now you could authenticate against our API with OAuth authentication only.

The APIs to manipulate event’s attendees and medias (comments, images, video, audio) has been released and published. As you’ll notice our API documentation has been moved to Google Code. This will let us better react on your feedbacks and discuss together. If you find any bug on the API or if you have any suggestions, open an issue.

Last information for today, we have extended the date format support with 2 new formats:

  • ‘2008-12-08′ or ‘2008-12-08 09:30′ or ‘2008-12-08 09:30 – 2008-12-09 10:30′ (ISO format)
  • ‘now to 15 pm’ or ‘now to tomorrow lunch’ or ‘15:30 to now’ any mix

Bringing more interactions to your agendas

We have just released a new version of mixin. This version is focused on bringing more features directly to your agendas. The lists have also been rearranged in order to make them easier to read.

You will notice among other things that you can now read or write comment, share, export or invite people from the lists of activities. This is a lot more convenient, you no longer have to go back and forth between event details and your agenda.

You also have a direct access to your friends, followers and neighbors profile and timeline. Now you can in seconds who are the people participating to your activities and how their agenda for the week looks like.

Tell us what you think and what you would want us to improve in that area.

Many user feedbacks asked us to add the “Overview” page to your home page. The “Overview” page shows you a sample of your upcoming/past activities and wishes. We also display your friends and the people you follow at the bottom of your home page.

Much more is coming in the next weeks, stay tuned.

mixin video review on ChannelFlip

Thanks to Rob and Iyaz from ChannelFlip for this fun review.

As they say, at mixin, we focus on your calendar and the calendars of your friends. It is good to know what your friends are doing, but it is even better to know what your friends are going to do.

One more thing…

If many of the attendees have Flickr and/or Picasa accounts, mixin will collect these images automatically and notify the participants when new medias are posted.

PS. I tried to embed the video into our wordpress blog, but couldn’t find a way to do it. If anybody knows…

Find and import friends from your online address book

We had many users saying us that they feel alone on mixin! With the new friend finder and importer, you can find and invite friends from most popular webmails, including Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo mail, MSN, AOL, Mac, LinkedIn and so on.

Give it a try, go to the Find and invite friends page and enter your address book username and password. At the fist step, you can send friend requests to existing mixin users and at the second step you can invite your other contacts to mixin.

Last but not least, we plan to add a Facebook friends importer soon, so stay tuned!
